Research Fellow-Integrating Materials, Behaviour, Robotics and Architecture in giant filter-feeding sharks
The Bartlett School of Architecture
Duties and Responsibilities
The Bartlett School of Architecture is one of the most influential, exciting and innovative architecture schools in the world, setting the agenda for what architecture is and could be. Building on a long tradition of innovation and ingenuity, The Bartlett School of Architecture has nearly 300 staff and 1,000 students from 50 countries who continue to explore new challenges with a passion for inventiveness, intelligence and wit.
The School is seeking to appoint a Research Associate to develop and be responsible for the delivery of a programme of high-quality research into the structure and operation of shark gills in the process of filter-feeding; a process with implications for the design of compliant mechanisms and fluid dynamics in architecture and broader domains. Research will involve the parametric modelling of biological components, testing of these via systematic production of physical prototypes and a mapping of their properties of filtration.
The project is expected to be approximately 2 years in total subject to subsequent funding being received.
Duration of the role is until 30 November 2021 in the first instance.
The successful candidate will have a postgraduate qualification in a scientifically and design literate subject (such as engineering) as well as a background in conducting computer simulations, including fluid mechanics, and in geometric modelling and digital fabrication.
Experience of academic research in a related field is essential as is a confident disposition with the ability to present complex topics to a variety of audiences, and to produce and deliver presentations with ease. As well as a flexible attitude to take on new areas of application we are seeking a motivated and organised individual, capable of managing a varied workload whilst meeting strict deadlines with minimum supervision.
Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at research assistant Grade 6B (salary 31,542 – 33,257 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
