Trinity House Group is pleased to be partnering with The University of Birmingham to support their search for a Financial Controller to join their central finance team. The University is both a world top 100 University and the 5th largest in the UK. Following a period of significant change and sustained growth we are looking to attract an outstanding, inspirational, and talented individual to lead the Corporate Accounting team.

This is a broad and challenging Financial Controller role, leading a small team (4-5 heads) and reporting into the Deputy Director of Finance.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Managing the Statutory Financial Audit process for the University and leading the relationship with the auditors
  • Preparing the consolidated Annual Report & Accounts on time and in accordance with UK GAAP, OfS requirements and all other relevant accounting regulations
  • Coordinating other financial regulatory submissions including those for OfS and HESA
  • Building robust internal financial controls across the University, proactively developing and enhancing current processes
  • Advising more broadly on technical accounting issues for strategic projects

Competency Requirements & Professional qualifications

  • A qualified accountant with a recognized professional qualification and experience.
  • Experience of working at a senior level in a large and complex organisation.
  • Thorough knowledge of UK GAAP.
  • Experience of developing financial systems and processes.
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal, with an ability to explain different concepts to non-specialists.
  • Strong leader of people with ability to challenge and develop team members
  • Ability to work in the detail as well as to think and act strategically
  • Driven by a changing environment and able to work collaboratively to deliver change
  • Demonstrable ability to translate external and/or technical requirements into practical solutions
