The School of Chemical Engineering is a multi-disciplinary and vibrant environment for outstanding study and research. The School is internationally renowned for its pioneering research in the areas of structured materials, formulation engineering, healthcare technologies and in energy storage. A recipient of a Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher Education in 2011 for research excellence, the School was ranked top in the recent REF 2014 exercise for the impact of its research within industry.
The School is internationally renowned for its pioneering research under the following themes:
• Formulation Engineering, including microstructure engineering and multiphase and particle processing
• Energy, including Birmingham Centre for Energy Storage, Bioenergy and Fuel Cells and their Fuels and the Centre for Sustainable Cooling (CSC)
• Healthcare Technologies Institute, including nanoengineering, biomaterials and tissue engineering
We seek to appoint to a lecturer or senior lecturer position, depending on experience. The overall roles within this post are:
• To initiate and conduct international-quality research in Chemical Engineering, to bring originality and new research directions in line with the above research themes. It is expected that the candidate will bring in significant research funding from UKRI (EPSRC, Innovate UK), EU and Industry.
• To develop and deliver undergraduate, postgraduate and CPD programmes in line with the School’s teaching strategy and to participate in the School’s overall contribution to the University.
Scope of the Role
We are seeking to appoint a candidate who will carry out international quality research within the School of Chemical Engineering. The School is internationally leading in the areas of energy, formulation engineering and healthcare technologies. We require an individual who can apply their research knowledge to further expand our activities and make a novel contribution and open up new areas of research, working with our strategic industrial partners.
The successful candidate will develop international research and teaching in the areas of recycling and materials recovery (especially valuable metals/minerals) to contribute to the above themes. Experience of chemical and physical methods and processes (rather than biological) and the circular economy are also required.
He/she will write technical papers, apply for grants and disseminate the results of the programme. It is expected that the candidate will bring in significant research funding from EPSRC, TSB, EC and industry to push research forward.
The applicants should have a clear understanding of how he/she might interact and forge collaborations that will develop the area and exploit the excellent environment for multidisciplinary research.
The individual will be able to demonstrate potential to carry out research at a level which is commensurate with an emerging international reputation, by evidence of high quality archival peer reviewed journal publications. The individual will contribute to the whole range of research, teaching and administration. Research will involve initiating, conducting and disseminating original research.
To plan and carry out research, using appropriate methodology and techniques. This may include, where appropriate to the discipline:
• Pursue personal research including developing research ideas and winning support, including financial support for the areas energy, formulation engineering or healthcare technologies within chemical and formulation engineering, in particular to research councils, Innovate UK, EU and with our strategic industrial partners including Johnson Matthey, Unilever, Procter & Gamble and Rolls-Royce.
• Plan, publish and/or execute high quality research in chemical engineering.
• Develop activities that strengthen the work of the Birmingham Centre for Strategic Elements & Critical Materials
• Project manage research activities, and/or supervise other research staff.
• Present findings in high quality peer reviewed academic publications, conference proceedings and/or book chapters, as appropriate.
• Develop novel methodologies and techniques appropriate for their research.
• Supervise and examine PhD students, both within the institution and externally.
• Provide expert advice to staff and students within the discipline.
• Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding.
Learning and Teaching
To use a variety of methods in teaching and advising individuals and groups of undergraduates, postgraduates, or CPD students. Where appropriate to the discipline this may include:
• Teach and examine courses at a range of levels within the School.
• Plan and review own teaching approaches and act as a mentor to encourage others to do the same.
• Develop programme proposals and make substantial contributions to the design of teaching programmes more widely in the School, as appropriate.
• Where appropriate, undertake and develop the full range of responsibilities in relation to supervision, marking and examining.
• Use appropriate approaches to learning and teaching in the fields of chemical and formulation engineering.
• Disseminate appropriate practices through suitable media.
• Develop and advise others on learning and teaching tasks and methods.
• Devise and supervise projects, student dissertations and practical work, particularly for the UG design and research projects.
To contribute to School administration or have a high level of responsibility for others.
• Contribute to the administration/management of research and/or teaching across the School as required.
• Lead and manage a team to devise and implement a new and/or revised process (e.g. new programme or a recruitment drive).
• Advise on personal development of colleagues and students.
• Make a major contribution to some administrative activities within the University (e.g. appeals panels, working groups).
• Contribute to widening participation, schools outreach, and/or public understanding of the discipline.
Teaching will include programme/module review and development as well as delivery and assessment at all levels. The role will typically also involve developing and advising others, including: (a) providing expert advice to staff and students, (b) supervising and examining PhD students, and (c) developing and advising others on learning and teaching tasks and methods.
Management and administration is likely to involve contributions at School level, and/or making an important contribution to some managerial/administrative activities within the University (e.g. working groups).
Skills and Experience
• A good first degree together with a PhD in Chemical Engineering or a similar discipline of relevance to our research themes of energy, formulation engineering and healthcare technologies.
• Membership of relevant Professional bodies.
• A record of internationally leading publications and evidence of a forward publication trajectory that will enhance the reputation of the School, College and University.
New staff with teaching responsibilities who have little experience of teaching in UK higher education are normally expected to register for the University’s Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education and to successfully complete the first 20 credit modules of the programme as a probationary requirement. At the point at which an offer of employment is made the successful candidate will be informed if the selection panel requires them to complete the first module of this PG Certificate programme.

• Ability to contribute to School management processes
