Summary of Role

To strengthen further our research and teaching portfolio, the Department of Social Work and Social Care is seeking to appoint a Professor/Associate Professor in Social Work with a strong leadership profile in Higher Education to be Head of Department for five years in the first instance. We are seeking an individual with a strong academic profile which stems from their expertise in teaching, research and/or impact and engagement to play a leading role in the development and delivery of the Department’s teaching and research. We welcome applications from individuals with expertise in any area of social work.

Professor of Social Work – Role Summary

To provide significant strategic leadership in teaching and research in social work, to enhance the profile of the institution.
The post holder will be expected to have:
• a high reputation, internationally, based on an extensive track record of innovative research and/or impact and engagement and have a major influence in social work or allied area;
and/or
• a high reputation based on exceptionally innovative and significant contributions to teaching and learning underpinned by scholarship relating to teaching and research, coupled with knowledge transfer and impact, and leadership and enhancement. The post-holder will be expected to demonstrate scholarship and leadership relating to both teaching and research:
• that makes a sustained broad, deep and outstanding impact across the College or University on: (a) enhancing the curricula, (b) advancing both teaching methods and teaching, learning and assessment systems, (c) enhancing the student learning experience, through extensive and widely recognised innovation that is recognised nationally and/or internationally as such;
• that ensures the teaching and learning they lead on, manage, and, where appropriate, deliver is research-led (albeit indirectly from keeping up to date with the developments in the subject area).
Management and administration will include Head of Department for at least five years and a continuing contribution to Departmental/School leadership and management activity with University wide involvement – for example through sustained high value research, knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, and public engagement or similar activities.

Person specification for Professor

• PhD or equivalent qualification or an equivalent body of work;
• Qualified social worker status;
• a substantial record of one or more of: (1) international quality outputs (2) delivery of a range of teaching and learning interventions (3) enterprise, engagement and impact outputs;
• an established and widely recognised excellence and international reputation in social work or a related discipline;
• proven ability to plan and lead the delivery of one or more of (1) curriculum development, assessment strategies, (2) EEI activities, (3) research;
• a sustained record of teaching-related or EEI or research funding;
• track record in translating education-related output into impact on other academic staff and on the wider community through engagement with policy and practice, consultancy and advisory work OR a track record in translating research into impact on other scholars and on the wider community through publication, engagement with policy and practice, consultancy and advisory work; OR a track record in translating research into impact on other scholars and on the wider community through publication, engagement with policy and practice, consultancy and advisory work;
• evidence of high-level leadership and management contributions.

Associate Professor of Social Work – RoleSummary

You will contribute at a senior level to leadership, management and teaching, and if applicable research and/or Enterprise, Engagement and Impact (EEI). In addition, you will be expected to contribute to academic citizenship, likely to be demonstrated through generous, mutually respectful and supportive working relationships with all staff and students.

Teaching is likely to include: (a) development and leadership of major teaching programmes or equivalent; and (b) enhancement of the student experience or employability.

Research is likely to involve an established national and international reputation through significant original research work and a clear record of impact.

EEI activities will include, as appropriate a range of activities such as high value impact, knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, and or public engagement

• High national reputation for the development of teaching and learning excellence within the discipline
• For the research and education pathway, a high-level peer esteem as evidenced by excellent reputation in the UK and often internationally, reflected in sustained high quality output, level of innovation, impact on subject and recognition
• For the Enterprise, Engagement and Impact pathway, a National reputation and recognition for high-level engagement and impact with key stakeholders
