The Theoretical and Applied Linguistics Section in the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics in the University of Cambridge is seeking to appoint an Assistant Professor in First and Second Language Acquisition and Language Typology from 1 September 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.

We invite applications from candidates with outstanding research and teaching potential in these areas of Linguistics. The successful candidate will normally hold a PhD in Linguistics and will have a record of, or clear potential for, outstanding research. Appointees will be expected to:

  • engage in high-level research,
  • seek opportunities to win external funding for that research,
  • publish in their specialist field(s),
  • teach and examine undergraduates,
  • supervise and examine MPhil and PhD postgraduate work,
  • contribute to Section and Faculty administration

The successful candidate will have, or be expected to develop, their own independent research portfolio of world-class research commensurate with the international reputation of the Theoretical & Applied Linguistics Section at the University of Cambridge.

The role holder will be expected to teach First and Second Language Acquisition and Language Typology to undergraduates at introductory, intermediate and advanced levels, as well as contribute to supervision and examining of graduate students, both MPhils and PhDs. Teaching will include lectures, seminars, and supervisions. The successful candidate will also be expected to take an active part in general Section and Faculty administration and examining. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are also essential.

Shortlisted candidates will be expected to give a presentation to a mixed group of graduate and undergraduate students and members of the Faculty prior to interview.
