The Medical Research Council Toxicology Unit is an internationally renowned institution focussed on the delivery of field-changing mechanistic insights into toxicology and disease. We are looking for two Bioinformaticians to join as Facility staff at the MRC Toxicology Unit. You will join the Bioinformatics Core Facility providing expert support to research scientists in data processing, statistical analysis, integration and visualisation of disparate datasets, development of analysis workflows, and training. You will contribute to various support and training tasks as part of a team under the supervision of the Bioinformatics Facility Manager.
A degree in a scientific or computational discipline is required together with a postgraduate degree (PhD) and/or experience in bioinformatics or computational biology. Experience in consulting with non-computational research scientists on experimental design and bioinformatics analysis and/or publication record of meaningful analysis roles in peer reviewed articles is highly desirable.
Basic programming or scripting skills are required together with experience in computational analysis of high-throughput molecular biology experiments.
Knowledge and ability to work in at least one of the following areas is essential:
- Sequence bioinformatics – DNA/RNA alignment tools, annotation of sequences/regions with genomic features, genome browsers/visualization.
- Mass-spectrometry data analysis – processing of proteomics/metabolomics data, feature identification
- Programming/scripting – software development, algorithm development, experience with cluster computing.
- General Statistical Data analysis – application of statistical tests and models, e.g., data normalization and clustering; familiarity with R/Bioconductor packages.
- Bioinformatics tools and databases – practical experience of a range of bioinformatics software packages and database resources.
This is an open-ended position funded by the MRC.
