The Cavendish Laboratories are at a highly transformative stage in its history and a rare opportunity has arisen for recruitment of a Cleanroom Manager which is one of our key technical positions. The role sits in the Technical Services Division, offering vital support to the Department’s research and educational activities. You will lead on the effective management and development of the Cleanrooms within the Cavendish Laboratory, which is a major part of our leading scientific institution.This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic professional with scientific and cleanroom management experience, to develop the service output to the Department, wider University community and our external users including those accessing our National Facility.
The Cleanroom facilities currently include a series of specialist cleanrooms in the Organic and Inorganic fields of research. The work is extremely varied, requiring creativity and ingenuity to ensure that users achieve the best possible outcomes for their research.
A major initial requirement of the role is to deliver the successful migration of the Cleanroom operations from the existing laboratory buildings to the new state of the art Ray Dolby Centre in 2023. Further key requirements are an effective delivery of the new Cleanrooms which includes developing the capabilities of the current dedicated team, in addition to providing sound cost management of the facilities finances and trading. The Cleanroom is a key component of the Cavendish Laboratory National Facility, therefore the Cleanroom Manager will need to engage with the National Facility Development Manager and external users, to facilitate a smooth visitor experience.
The successful applicant will be educated to degree/level 7 vocational qualification in a scientific discipline with very good communication, analytical and IT skills. A full working knowledge of appropriate cleanroom laboratory standards and the related statutory H&S requirements is essential. Significant experience in a scientific research environment is required, with some of this in management roles including staff development and apprentice training. Proficiency in management of P&L and capital expenditure budgets is a prerequisite for this role. Project management experience, from initial concept to delivery in laboratory design and scientific equipment installations is highly desirable.
