A position exists for a Custodian to work as part of a small team within the Facilities group at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences, alongside the Facilities Manager and Senior Custodian.

The duties of the custodian include cleaning and preparing teaching rooms between lectures, in accordance with the daily schedule of specific requirements, often to tight time schedules; and replenishing teaching room supplies. The duties also include setting up required audio-visual equipment, e.g. overhead, slide and data projectors; reporting equipment faults; and liaising with technical staff over repairs.

The role holder will provide Reception cover, including operating the switchboard, greeting and directing visitors and students around the site in a courteous manner, monitoring CCTV cameras and help points, and allocating visitor car-parking. They will assist with building security (e.g. checking doors and windows) and providing access for other staff and external contractors.

The role holder will also assist with deliveries and the distribution of parcels and goods throughout the site, and help with the movement of furniture and other equipment. They will assist in waste disposal by emptying bins and supporting recycling initiatives e.g. waste paper and aluminium can collections, and provide occasional cleaning cover to key areas during holidays /absence of cleaning staff.

No formal qualifications are necessary for this role, but candidates should have a good level of education. GCSE’s or equivalent in Maths and English are desirable.

Candidates will be expected to organise their own daily schedule, working autonomously and to an agreed routine. An approachable manner and good customer service skills are essential, along with good problem-solving abilities.

Candidates should have experience in basic repairs and maintenance (e.g. simple repairs to furniture, decorating, fitting shelves, notice boards) and an understanding of safety procedures.

Hours of work: Mon, Tues & Thurs 9am – 5.30pm, Weds & Fri 8am – 5pm. On occasion, some evening and weekend work may be required.
