The Cancer Research UK Cambridge Centre at the University of Cambridge unites more than 700 laboratory and healthcare professionals around a common mission to end death and disease caused by cancer, through research, treatment and education. As a CRUK Major Centre we serve as a national and international resource for patients with cancer and their families, researchers and health care providers, and cancer professionals in training.

In 2026, the CRUK Cambridge Centre will move to the new Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital (CCRH). Over the intervening 4 years, there is a need to ensure that the Centre continues to develop the research foundations necessary to support extraordinary cancer research.

The Director of Clinical Integration will provide strategic oversight and lead on developing an environment whereby research techniques and ideas can progress from the lab into the clinic, via work on retrospective patient data & samples, through to robust, agile, rapid-readout clinical trials and regulatory approval using the CCRH as a workbench/sandpit, through to adoption in the NHS. The role will also lead and nurture strategically important collaborations with a range of stakeholders, in particular partners at Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH), the NHS and industry, that will support research integration into the clinical setting to the ultimate benefit of patients.

Key accountabilities of the role will be:

  • Leading key areas of activity to ensure that the CCRH is set up to enable world-class, practice-changing research and clinical integration.
  • Providing leadership and strategic direction to ensure Centre research activities are integrated into the new Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital
  • Consulting with all areas of the CRUK Cambridge Centre to understand requirements and wishes for operating world class research across the campus
  • Working with CRUK Cambridge Centre senior leaders to develop and implement the long-term strategy of the CRUK Cambridge Centre.
  • Key member of the Executive Committee and senior leadership of the CRUK CC.
  • Leading on the development of unified operating models with CUH that support research integration into the clinical care pathway both within CUH and the new CCRH.
  • Leading projects and collaborations of strategic importance.
  • Identifying, supporting, implementing and evaluating new and current best practices in all areas of Centre-supported translational research.
  • Membership of, and contributing to, the CCRH delivery workstreams.

Essential Skills, Experience and Qualifications:

  • Degree in Life Sciences with experience in translational health sciences at programme manager/lead level
  • Experience at managing large projects with different stakeholders in science and clinical care
  • Experience in multidisciplinary fields of cancer
  • Skilled at high-level report writing for key decision-makers
  • Skilled at presenting strategic communications and complex science to large audiences and non-scientific readers/audiences
  • Proven ability to create and nurture partnerships across disciplines and sectors
  • Outstanding skills in leadership, facilitation and consensus building, with and without direct line management authority.
  • Highly numerate with strong analytical capabilities and financial awareness.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 4 years in the first instance.
