The mission of the Cambridge Graphene Centre (CGC) is to investigate the science and technology of graphene and related materials. This engineering innovation centre allows our partners to meet, and effectively establish joint industrial-academic activities to promote innovative and adventurous research with an emphasis on applications.

We are looking for candidates to work on development of graphene and related materials to be used as saturable absorbers (GSAs) for ultrafast mode-locked lasers. The GSAs will be used to passively mode-lock and synchronize two fiber-laser cavities sharing a common arm to realize turn-key, compact laser sources, as needed for coherent Raman microscopy, where compactness, ease of use and speed are key. These will be used in medical histopathology, where coherent Raman yields chemically sensitive information on tumour tissues, providing decision support to clinicians.

The ideal candidate should have experience in nonlinear and ultrafast optics, with a particular emphasis on mode-locked lasers and fiber lasers. The candidate will work closely with Cambridge Raman Imaging Ltd. Its mission is to provide clinically actionable knowledge of disease processes, diagnosis, prognosis and therapeutic response from cell and tissue samples using quantitative and spatially resolved spectroscopic analysis to identify and characterise tumours with high sensitivity, specificity and staging.

The successful candidate will have a first class degree in Engineering, Nanotechnology, Applied Physics or Material Science.

The EPSRC DTP studentships are fully-funded (fees and maintenance) for eligible UK students. EU and international students may be considered for a small number of awards at the UK rate. Full eligibility criteria can be found via the following link;https://www.ukri.org/councils/esrc/career-and-skills-development/funding-for-postgraduate-training/eligibility-for-studentship-funding/

Applications should be submitted via the University of Cambridge Applicant Portal www.postgraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/courses/directory/egegpdpeg, with Professor Andrea C. Ferrari identified as the potential supervisor. Please note there is a £75 application fee.

The University actively supports equality, diversity and inclusion and encourages applications from all sections of society.
