EPSRC ICASE Studentship – Investigating the Impact of Future In-Vehicle HMI Trends

Applications are invited for a joint JLR/EPSRC ICASE-funded PhD project in Automotive Human-Machine.

There is a trend in automotive Human-Machine Interface (HMI) design for multiple, dedicated displays distributed across the vehicle to provide drivers and passengers access to the range of new features on offer. This progression can create numerous tensions in design, given the limited space within the vehicle. Conversely, with enhancements in HMI display technologies, there appears to be a trend of integrating information into large, single, high-resolution displays providing features in one accessible location, that might not be suited to the prevailing task. The question, whether this compromises the usability of this information, remains open. We need to investigate what is needed for the next generation of displays.

This PhD will investigate some of the key underlying Human Factors research questions that need to be addressed:

-Where should the single display be positioned in the vehicle?-How should the HMI / driver information be displayed on the new single display?
-How much time does the driver require to adjust to the new display?

The PhD will primarily consider non-automated vehicles but consider how these displays can be also used for autonomous vehicles.

Applicants should have (or expect to obtain by the start date) at least a good 2.1 degree in an Engineering or related subject.

EPSRC ICASE studentships are fully-funded (fees and maintenance) for eligible UK students. International (including EU) students may be considered for partial funding (home-level fees and maintenance).

The studentship is funded for 4 years and is full time only.

The start date will be 1 October 2022.

The PhD will be jointly supervised by Prof John Clarkson, Cambridge EDC, and Dr Lee Skrypchuk, Jaguar Land Rover.
