The Department of Geography wishes to appoint a full-time IT Manager.
The role holder will be responsible for the creation of the IT vision of the Department and its delivery, leading a team of departmental computing staff and working collaboratively with the Assistant Director of Research in Computing, who provides expert support specifically in the areas of research software engineering and data management for academic and research purposes. Through a combination of project work and the delivery of day-to-day services, the role holder will ensure that IT creates the digital environment to enable the Department to fulfil its goals in research, teaching and learning, as well as providing the tools to support the delivery of the Department’s administrative functions. They will conduct a review of IT needs and services in order to produce a medium-term strategy for IT provision in the Department.
The successful candidate will have knowledge of Linux infrastructure configuration and of support of a majority of the following: Design, maintenance and operation of Windows, Mac, Android, iOS clients; relevant server environments; centralised authorisation services; automated installation of OS and software deployment; networking; virtualisation; audio visual; website management. They will be qualified to degree or level 7 vocational standard, or with equivalent experience.
The successful candidate will be an experienced, proactive and customer-focused IT manager and leader, with evidence of working at a strategic level in an organisation to create and deliver department-wide change. They will be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing, to share technical knowledge and skill to increase the available pool of skilled staff, and to build relationships at all levels of the organisation.
