The Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences (INI) is a national and international visitor research centre running programmes on selected themes, with applications in a very wide range of societal, scientific and technological areas. The Institute attracts leading scientists, both from the UK and from overseas, to interact on research over extended periods. Researchers are invited personally to participate in the research programmes and/or the workshops which form part of the Institute’s activities.

We are seeking a highly competent and technically proficient IT Project Manager to lead the IT team through a process of internal review and development. The role is available as a 9-month secondment and open to colleagues working in an IT related role at the University of Cambridge.

The main purpose of the role will be to conduct a review of systems at the Institute, from both a technical and user-experience perspective, providing the Senior Management Team with recommendations on INI’s future IT strategy. Additionally, the postholder will be responsible for managing the development and delivery of technical projects which arise during the course of the secondment.

Working closely with the Institute’s established software developers, a roadmap and associated business cases detailing future IT strategy at the Institute will be delivered at month 6 of the secondment, allowing the last 3 months to be dedicated to implementation and futureproofing. This roadmap will include details of IT staffing and infrastructure needed to support the recommendations made. Day-to-day oversight of the technical duties completed by the existing IT team also forms a critical part of the role.

We are looking for an enthusiastic team player who is friendly and adaptable, with the ability to communicate complex technical IT innovations and solutions with colleagues of varying technical abilities. A willingness to work collaboratively with the Senior Management Team to achieve a forward-looking, shared vision and well supported, robust systems is key to this role. Applicants should be educated to degree level (or equivalent) and have proven knowledge and experience in PhP, Agile, CakePhP (or any other PhP Framework), GitLab, Linux server administration, PostgreSQL/MySQL, Javascript, HTML and CSS. Exceptional planning skills and an ability to multi-task in a busy environment is vital.

Previous experience of working in a University of Cambridge IT role is essential due to the time-limited secondment and requisite advanced knowledge of University IT systems.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 9 months in the first instance.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.

The post is offered to internal candidates only on the basis of a secondment from their current role in the University.
