The Brenton research group is located at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute University of Cambridge. The Institute is core-funded by Cancer Research UK and has state-of-the-art research facilities for over 20 research groups to undertake world-class research into all aspects of cancer biology.

Ovarian cancer is the 4th commonest cause of female cancer related deaths. The research aims of our laboratory are to identify therapeutically relevant mechanisms of drug resistance in patients with ovarian cancer using genomic and functional approaches. We are using next-generation sequencing methods to identify novel, therapeutically relevant, copy number signatures associated with particular mutational processes in patient samples and developing plasma biomarkers of response based upon circulating tumour DNA.

We are looking for the Research Assistant to support genomic projects in the lab based around next-generation sequencing of patient tissues, body fluids and established cell lines.

Your primary responsibility will be for supporting translational research projects which will include the following:

  • Genomic profiling using shallow whole genome sequencing, tagged amplicon deep sequencing and mutation analysis.
  • Library preparation for next-generation sequencing: whole genome sequencing library preparation, tagged amplicon deep sequencing and detection of low prevalence mutations in plasma.
  • Support the development of cutting-edge genomic technology including isolation and shallow whole genome sequencing of single tumour cells from patients’ tissue
  • Assay design and optimization for quantitative PCR assays on RNA and DNA and targeted amplicon deep sequencing.
  • Day to day sample management.
  • Handling of primary human tissue (frozen and paraffin-embedded) and extraction of nucleic acids.
  • Previous experience with database (Access, SQL) and programming skills (R language, Unix) are highly desirable but not essentialSecondary duties include routine laboratory management tasks.

This post requires a bachelor’s degree in a biological science, and sound knowledge of genomic and molecular biology techniques including molecular biology techniques, standard cell culture, mutation analysis of sequence variants. The successful applicant will be able to provide examples of being both a good team player and the ability to work independently. Excellent communication and organization skills are essential. This post would be ideal for highly motivated and experienced or non-experienced research assistant or individuals seeking to increase their functional genomic skills prior to starting a PhD.
