We are currently recruiting for a Research Laboratory Manager at the Cavendish Laboratories, University of Cambridge. The role sits in the Technical Services Division giving support to the department’s research and teaching activities, reporting to the Laboratory Superintendent. You will be responsible for overseeing the effective running and development of the research laboratory within our Maxwell building part of our leading scientific institution.

This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic professional with scientific management experience to develop the service output to the department and wider University community.

The Maxwell laboratories include a series of specialist labs ranging from , Lasers, X-Ray, Glovebox technologies and hosting a collection of collaborative industrial partners. The Maxwell technician team provide essential support to the research programme of the Laboratory. The work is extremely varied, requiring great creativity and ingenuity. The role is required to develop the capabilities of the staff including apprentice training and provide sound cost management of the laboratories finances and trading.

The Department will be moving to a new Ray Dolby Centre in 2023 and this role will play a key part in the support to the Cavendish Laboratory as part of the National facility.

The successful applicant will be educated to degree level 7 in a scientific discipline with very good communication, analytical and IT skills. A full working knowledge of appropriate laboratory standards and the related statutory H&S requirements. Significant experience in a scientific research environment is required, with some of this in responsible management roles including staff development and apprentice training. Management of P&L and Capital expenditure budgets. Project management experience, from initial concept to delivery in laboratory design and scientific equipment installations.
