The Crop Science Centre is seeking to recruit a Laboratory Technician. The Crop Science Centre opened in October 2020 and benefits from the diverse skills and expertise of the University of Cambridge and NIAB, providing an environment for research excellence in crops, with the drive and expertise for scientific translation to address real-world problems. About 50 staff and students are located at the Centre, distributed in between three already established research groups and three fellows starting new research programs.

The role holder will report to the Labs and Research Facilities Manager and will contribute to the smooth running of research activities across the centre.

The role holder will have a central role in procurement of CSC lab consumables, experience in purchasing lab consumables is essential.

The role holder will also assist with maintaining general order and safety at CSC including: Contribute to ensure safety regulations and codes of practice are implemented – Instruct on the correct use and maintenance of equipment. The role holder will help to keep risk assessments and standard operating procedures up to date, specially supporting the fellows in this activity.

The role holder will prepare and analyse samples in support of research activities. In particular, the role holder will have a key role in setting up and running a N. benthamiana transient transformation service. They will also provide horticultural support for the CSC fellows’ work. Knowledge in handling plants and in plant transformation methods is desirable.

The role holder will work as part of a wider team of laboratory technicians and willingness to provide assistance when demands are high, and being a strong team player is essential. The role holder will also need good communication and interpersonal skills.
