The Wellcome – MRC Cambridge Stem Cell Institute (CSCI) is a world-leading centre for stem cell research with the mission to transform human health through a deep understanding of stem cell biology. The CSCI spans three University Schools (Biological Sciences, Clinical Medicine and Physical Sciences) and heads an Interdisciplinary Research Centre involving two additional Schools (Schools of Technology and Humanities and Social Sciences). The CSCI is based in the Jeffrey Cheah Biomedical Centre (JCBC) which is located at the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, together with the Cambridge Institute of Therapeutic Immunology and Infectious Disease (CITIID) and the Milner Therapeutics Institute (MTI). IT support for the building is run in house by a small cross departmental team who provides IT support for JCBC as a whole.

Applications are invited for the post of Senior Systems Administrator, a key member of the JCBC computing support team. You will contribute to planning computing infrastructure and deputize in the management of a small team to provide a comprehensive support service for up to ~600 research and administrative staff. The post holder will be required to enhance the IT services at JCBC with a special focus on the scientific computing/ bioinformatics service and support the more challenging desktop/infrastructure support tasks. This may involve close working with the Clinical School Computing Service. The successful candidate will require excellent communication skills.

Candidates should be proficient working in a heterogeneous environment consisting of a Windows and Linux server environment, Mellanox networking and Netapp/Spectra Logic storage. The role holder will provide first line infrastructure (server, network, security, backup) support and specialist desktop support (Unix).

Proficiency with SLURM job manager and as well as Linux system administration tools (Nagios, Ganglia) is essential, as is the ability to plan and manage budgets, tender for infrastructure and write policies for both data retention and security. Familiarity with data analysis tools (R, Matlab), scripting language (e.g. Perl/Python), server orchestration (Ansible, Puppet), bioinformatics and/or a life sciences experience would be an advantage.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 30 June 2024 in the first instance.
