Teaching Associate or Senior Teaching Associate – Fixed term (5 years)Grade 7, Grade 8 or 9

The Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology would like to appoint a fixed term 5 year Teaching Associate or Senior Teaching Associate to support and maintain the Department’s national and international reputation for excellence in teaching. This post will commence as soon as possible.

The post holder will be responsible for the planning, preparation and delivery of relevant courses/programmes of study within the Department as allocated by the Deputy Head (Teaching) and for helping to design the new Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology Tripos (degree programme) which starts in October 2023.

Current areas of particular teaching need for undergraduates are in core Chemical Engineering subjects such as Fluid Mechanics, Rheology and Process Dynamics and Control. Experience of Design in an industrial context would be useful.

Appointment as Teaching Associate or Senior Teaching Associate at Grade 7, 8, or 9 will depend upon the experience and skills of the successful candidate (as outlined in the person profile). The information below outlines the typical duties and responsibilities that would be undertaken at each level in relation to examining, marking, lecturing, course development, administration and other duties. The post holder will be expected both to deliver existing course material and to adapt and/or create new courses/modules.

It is anticipated that the (Senior) Teaching Associate would make significant contributions towards any resulting changes to the Department’s teaching programmes, as may be appropriate.

Those appointed will cover approximately double the normal University Teaching Officer teaching load. This equates to approximately 70-80 lectures per year, either examining or membership of the design project team, setting and marking at least two exercises and running a lab class or equivalent.

Candidates will be expected to have an undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering and a PhD in Chemical Engineering or a closely related discipline and have a proven specialist academic interest in the subject. Substantial teaching experience in Chemical Engineering is highly desirable. Experience working in the chemical industry is desirable but not essential.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral) are required to explain concepts and complex information to non-experts, develop and encourage the commitment to learn in others and to present material to a range of audiences. The role holder may also need to provide pastoral assistance to students although more in-depth issues would be referred to College Tutors in the first instance.

The role holder should have some experience of successfully developing and delivering teaching at university level, including both lectures and seminars or smaller group work and is expected to maintain and develop his/her knowledge in the subject area by reading other academic material, attending conferences and active discussions with other academics in the field.

Limited funding: The funds for this post are available for 5 years in the first instance.
