School of Health and Social Care (HSC)
The School of Health & Social Care has an excellent reputation for teaching and research. Our academic members of staff include occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, psychological therapists, nurses, social workers, oral health practitioners and sociologists. The School is run over 2 campuses; Southend and Colchester. Academic staff are supported by a team of administrative staff based at both Colchester and Southend campuses.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Research Officer to join the School to work on the project A Better Start Southend (“ABSS”).

A Better Start Southend (“ABSS”) is part of a ten-year programme set up by the National Lottery Community Fund with the aim of transforming services for very young children and their families. Southend-on-Sea is one of five sites that will share funding as the Programme develops.

Duties of the Role

The main purpose of this post will be to undertake evaluative research data collection and analysis and report writing in relation to the A Better Start Southend (ABSS) evaluation; and liaise with funders and collaborators to ensure the successful and timely completion of such research activities.

Duties will also include engaging in individual and/or collaborative research activity; producing research outputs for publication at acceptable levels of volume and academic excellence and disseminating the results of research and scholarship through appropriate Knowledge Exchange activities; supporting and facilitating synergies with Research Centres and Institutes within and beyond the University of Essex; and building capacity of civil society partners in Service User and Carer involvement.

Qualifications and Skills required

The successful candidate will hold a relevant doctoral level degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. social sciences, social work, allied health), or, be close to completion of a relevant PhD, or possess equivalent professional experience.

Applicants are expected to have evidence of a developing research agenda, engagement in high-quality research activity and a developing research profile; a developing record of publications in internationally recognised, reputable journals appropriate to career stage and discipline norms; and strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

Evidence of engaging with service users or carers as part of a research project and experience of using qualitative methods are also essential for this post.
